What survives when measurable cognition gets cheap? The people who can still work when the map fades out.
Raw intelligence is getting cheap. AGI compresses the price of measurable thought toward compute and pushes value toward the thin edge where metrics break: setting intent, spotting failure, and taking responsibility when nobody can verify the answer.
The career question is getting brutal: are you producing measurable output, or are you deciding what should count, what can be trusted, and what the system missed?
In an AGI economy, abundance shows up first in answers. Scarcity survives in responsibility, ground truth, and the people who know when the dashboard is lying. The winning move is to become the person who notices that the system is answering the wrong question perfectly.
When AI is ubiquitous, the market stops paying much for work that looks like standardized cognition: summarizing, sorting, drafting, coding to spec, moving information from one box to another. Once a task is legible enough to benchmark, monitor, and price, competition drives it toward compute cost.
The scarce layer is the world of unknown unknowns.
Known risks are manageable. You can model them, insure them, monitor them. Unknown unknowns are different. You don’t just lack the answer. You lack the map. The system can look healthy while it quietly learns the wrong lesson, optimizes the wrong proxy, or builds fragility under the surface.
That’s the part of the economy AI won’t cheapen quickly.
The failure mode is not “AI makes mistakes.” Humans make mistakes too. The failure mode is that AI lets firms scale decisions faster than they can scale verification. It creates a false sense of control. The organization automates what it can measure, then discovers too late that the important variable lived outside the model.
So what remains valuable?
First, people who define intent. Not prompt-writers. Not button-pushers. People who can decide what the system should do when the objective is contested, incomplete, or shifting. In plain terms: founders, product leaders, operators, researchers, and domain experts who can tell when the KPI stopped matching reality.
Second, people who verify and absorb liability. In medicine, law, security, finance, engineering, and hiring, someone still has to sign. Someone still has to say: I’ve checked this, I understand the downside, and I’ll own the consequence if it breaks. AI can expand that person’s reach. It doesn’t remove the need for the role.
Third, people who create meaning and coordinate humans. Status, trust, taste, legitimacy, narrative, community. These don’t collapse into benchmarks cleanly because their value comes from shared belief. As more cognitive labor gets automated, these layers matter more, not less.
The practical implication is blunt.
Automate aggressively. Then look at what survives. If a job mostly rearranges public information, assume margin compression. If a workflow depends on rare judgment, privileged ground truth, or trust under uncertainty, protect it. Build systems that surface anomalies, not just averages. Keep humans close to edge cases. Preserve apprenticeship somewhere, because junior work used to train judgment and that training loop is disappearing fast.
The winners won’t be the people who can produce the most answers.
They’ll be the ones who can tell when the system is answering the wrong question.
